CHAPTER 55
WASHINGTON, D.C.
During the last days of the Reagan presidency, the tunnel was allegedly used to allow Richard Nixon discreet access to the Oval Office for at least one consultation with Ronald Reagan.
The marine captain accompanied Gina from the garage, escorting her through a heavy steel door that slid open after he entered the proper combination of numbers into an adjacent keypad. Gina would have expected something more high tech, like a retinal or fingerprint scan, but keypads must have been state-of-the-art when this facility had last been upgraded.
A matching door lay at the end of a fifty-foot hallway, guarded by two marines wearing body armor and wielding M4 assault rifles. Gina didnât detect any cameras, but knew they must be there, following every step she took.
At the end of the hall, the marine captain presented his ID to be scanned. Then both officers inserted their keys into matching stations on either side of the shiny steel slab door. They looked at each other, nodded, and turned the keys in the same instant, the way she had seen done in movies by officers manning nuclear-missile silos.
The steel door slid open without making a sound, as if it were floating. The marine captain gestured for Gina to enter.
âYouâre not coming along?â
He handed her back her phone. âDonât bother turning it back on. All signals are blocked down here.â
Gina nodded and stepped through into some kind of antechamber set before yet another matching steel door. The door behind her whisked closed, again without making a sound. Then the door before her slid open in identical fashion.
To reveal Rod Rust, her mentor and superior at the New York field office.
